Who are Raiko & Kintoki?
Minamoto Raiko and Sakata Kintoki are two characters from the anime OVA Kai Doh Maru, released by Production I.G. (Ghost in the Shell, Jinroh) in 2001. Though somewhat short, the film is packed with action, drama, and intrigue. Based upon a few old Japanese legends, including "The Four Knights of Kyo"...

Sakata Kintoki, the title character, is actually a girl but was raised a boy to continue the family line. At a young age, she and her nursemaid were forced to flee when her parents were killed by her uncle, who wanted to be the head of the family. They settled in the mountains but she experienced many hardships there. Over time, she became known as "Kaidohmaru" because of her fierce behavior and was feared by many of the villagers. Eventually, her uncle found her and Kintoki fought bravely, but she was about to be killed. If it hadn't been for...
Minamoto Raiko, who was traveling at the time, came upon them and intervened. Shooting an arrow at her uncle, he saved her, rode in and carried her away from the bloodshed, his knights following behind. He'd heard about "Kaidohmaru" from the villagers earlier and was intrigued by this young boy's behavior. (Later, he found out she was a girl.) So, he took her to Kyo and raised her as a knight...
Over the years, their feelings of respect for each other grew into (mostly hidden) love. (According to the DVD, at least.) Once, when Raiko questions his decision to raise her as a warrior, Kintoki tells him she'd rather be fighting for/with him than undertaking more ladylike chores. They have a good understanding and do their best to protect the city and each other.
Why make a fanlisting?
Well, as stated above, Raiko & Kintoki have a unique relationship. I personally think that they make a good couple, because they're both strong and caring people. (Plus, their DVD profiles give a lot away...) ^0^
[MAJOR Spoiler Alert!]
Kintoki showed great emotion when she tried to get away from Ohni-Hime; Raiko was outside battling her minions, calling for her. Afterwards, when she saw him injured/possibly dead on the temple steps, she cried her heart out. Then, she supported his weight on her shoulder and said that they'd go back to the city...and I believe they made it back, together. (Yes, a very ambiguous ending, filled with endless possibilites.) ~_^
